Happy Monday friends. I hope you all had a fun weekend.
Its still really warm in my neck of the woods so I took advantage of the 80 degree weather by knocking out a quick warm weather project. We have a new front door color guys.
This was a project I didn't intend to tackle until next spring, but I figured why not just do it now. After narrowing down the color to teal we decided on Valspar Gypsy Teal color matched in Behr Marquee paint.
While I preferred a green based teal, Naomi really wanted one with more blue in it so this is the one that won out. We also really liked Realm by Behr, but it was just a tad too deep in the end. This was a very easy project to complete and here's how I did it.
The door looked like this when we got started
After I determined the existing paint was latex I was able to set a plan in action for painting the door. First I washed it down with soap and water and let it dry. Next I used a deglosser to sand the surface and prep for paint.
Because I was painting latex over latex, and I was using a paint and primer in one specifically designed for exterior use, I did not prime the door first. I painted the door on the hinges and just taped everything off before starting.
Before I started on the door, I had already determined I wanted to change the hardware. The builder grade brass was showing quite a bit of wear.
The hardware was in great working condition and I didn't want the expense of replacing it so I opted to spay it. We after deliberating between black and nickel I decided black would best compliment the new teal color. Plus I felt the nickel would get lost among all the beige. I chose to go with a hammered finish for a little textural interest.
I used a medium grit then 220 grit paper to remove any peeling and flaking of the old finish
I then taped off the surrounding areas and sprayed on a good adhesion primer. My go to primer is Zinsser Cover stain. I had Zinsser Bin 1-2-3 on hand though. I painted the hardware in place because since I was painting the door anyway. I put in an old key to ensure no spray got inside the lock
After the primer dried I gave it a couple coats of paint
and a closeup of the new hammered texture
While the paint was still wet I removed the key and plastic and prepared to paint the door. For this job I used my 2 1/2" and small 1" Purdy brushes.
I originally intended to use the roller for the flat parts of the door, but I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to painting woodwork. I really really prefer to hand brush.
I painted the door in the same way I do cabinets. Starting with the recesses of the panels then moving on to the flat areas of the door
After just one coat I was completely in love!
I let it dry for about 3 hours and brushed on the second coat. By the end of the day it was completely dry and the next day I was so excited to see the final results.
I really love how it turned out. Still have to paint out the doorbell and Ill probably add a kickplate to the door as well.
Oh and I've got to do something about this light
Its ridiculously high up. I can barely reach it even with a super tall ladder. Id love to see an oversized lantern hanging there eventually.
So what did you do over the weekend? Until next time....

ReplyDeleteI love it, what a pretty color! I'm a big fan of bright colored doors. Mine is boring black right now, but you just might have inspired me :)
ReplyDeleteThe color is so you and looks gorgeous and fun. Love it and so much better than before. I can totally picture a huge lantern hanging there too. Can't wait to see what you'll find!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. Huge impact for a small project. Painting the hardware was genius too, it totally pops against the door color.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on the front door entry as well, we have a full covered country porch at the entry and that stupid ceiling needs scraped (ugh) and painted. I suspect I'll be at it all week, hubby better be ready for the neck massages at night. If I can beat the weather (temps) changing here, I also plan on painting the front door. What color ... teal! ... great minds think alike :) What a fun color you two choose and I really like how the painted black hardware grounds the door color.
ReplyDeleteLoving the new color...looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so cute! Love that color!
ReplyDeleteLove the bright cherry color on your front door!! It looks so good with your stone columns - so glad you went with a fun color!! & Yes a big oversize light fixture is a must for your outdoor area :) I love big outdoor light, the bigger the better :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Such a difference! That blue is such a happy color. And such a clever idea of painting the hardware while still attached to the door! I painted my front door (while still on the hinges) but left the hardware alone since I didn't want to mess with removing it. (I'm now going to add it to my never ending project list!)
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Such a fresh and fun update!
