I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! Man I missed you guys. I'm so happy to be back. My vacay was..........exhausting. Ever had one of those vacations where you need a vacation from your vacation? Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt. Aside from the less than desirable weather and plans that didn't quite happen the way we anticipated, my sweet nephew is absolutely gorgeous and he completely stole my heart.
So, before I left I revealed that I had finally gotten my hands on some neon spray paint. For those of you who are new to the blog, I'm kinda crushing on it. I absolutely couldn't wait to add a splash of it somewhere in the house. I decided to make our outdated bar stools the victims of my neon experiment.
Here's a look at what the bar stools looked like before
Not much to write home about. These have been with us through many many moves and served the purpose of mere function. They are way off style-wise and are actually about 3-5" too tall for our 36 1/2" high counter tops. They come in at 29" tall and the ideal height is about 24-26".
We've been shopping around for new bar stools for a while now and haven't quite found "the ones" yet, so I figured if I have to live with them for now, they may as well be pretty! Enter Rustoleum
When I initially started this project I used the Krylon brand neon spray paint. I switched to Rustoleum after the first couple coats on the first bar stool. The reason why is because I found the Krylon spray paint was not reaching opacity. It was neon, but more of a sheer neon, not opaque neon. It's very similar to the difference between sheer and opaque nail polish. Now I'm not saying anything negative against the Krylon product, I'm just saying for this specific project it wasn't the best choice.
Here's another thing of note: when using neon spray paint in order to reach optimum color pay off YOU MUST START OFF WITH A COMPLETELY WHITE BASE. For me, this meant a couple coats of Zinsser Cover Stain primer (i used the spray primer for this project). Make sure you prime really well. I actually had to go back and re prime because I didn't do it well enough the first time. But all my work paid off because the end result is just what I was hoping for.
These babies are electric!! The camera didnt quite capture the true color, but believe you me, they are N-E-O-N! They are definitely an unexpected punch of color in the kitchen and I love them! I'm really going to enjoy them while they last. Now to find my next victim(s).....
So what do you think? Any others in the same boat as Naomi and think I've gone off the deep end? Until next time.....

Oh wow, they are definitely bright, but I really like them!! I love that you tried something different.
ReplyDeleteThanks Brandi! That's what it's all about, right?
DeleteI don't know any other vacations. I always need a vacation after I went on vacation!
ReplyDeleteI love the bar stools in neon. Are you sure you need to buy other ones ;)
I just bought cheapo ones too for my kitchen and have to paint them. I couldn't afford the lucite stools that I wanted. Well, maybe Santa (hubby) can bring them for me :)
Oooh hopefully Santa will surprise you;) I'd love to see what you do with your interim bar stools.
